Flight Over Seabrook II

2001

On Clear Lake, Seabrook, TX

Flight Over Seabrook II is based on the coastal wading birds found throughout Seabrook in all seasons. These birds are noted for their long legs and distinctive bills that enables them to forage through the brackish water of the limited marshland habitat to find prey like amphibians, crustaceans, fish and insects. These birds are depicted by their distinct heads intertwining across the body of our fiberglass mascot pelican of Seabrook. The black crowned night heron, tricolored heron, white ibis and roseate spoonbill resonate on the surface of the brown pelican, while the yellow crowned night heron, little blue heron, glossy ibis and great blue heron solidify the surface of the white pelican.

The coastal wading birds depicted in the body of the pelican meld from one side to the next into their closest relatives creating uniformity, definition and understanding. Depicted in the bill of either side of the pelican is the majestic blue heron and roseate spoonbill seen foraging in their native habitat. These two particular coastal wading birds are a source for my own spiritual wealth. They provide inspiration and pure fascination when viewing them in their native habitat. By depicting these coastal wading birds as a collage of colorful forms, they are more easily viewed from a distance.

Coastal wading birds are a symbol of Seabrook. These birds represent the highly diverse bird life in the area that varies from season to season. Since Seabrook is a sanctuary to birds on one of the largest migratory paths in North America, Flight Over Seabrook II celebrates and awakens awareness to the casual observer regarding the diversity of bird life in the area.
