Migratory Birds

2001

Lakewood Yacht Club

located on Nasa Road One, Seabrook, TX

Since Seabrook is on the Great Texas Birding Trail, Bejat decided to depict the annual migratory birds, one side represents the summer season melding into the other side which represents the winter season. Similar scenes are set as a backdrop to express the "change in shifts". Inspired by her research on the many birds, Bejat found great interest in the legends behind the birds like that of the painted bunting. According to Native American Indian legend "when the Great Spirit was giving all the birds their colors, he ran short of dye, so he gave the last one - the painted bunting - a coat of many colors made from dabs of whatever was left over. The birds representing the winter season are the whooping crane, belted kingfisher, anna's hummingbird, and mating pair of vermilion flycatchers. Whereas, the white ibis, ruby-throated hummingbird pair, painted bunting, and purple martin represent the summer season. Details like the bark attached to the legs add interest and volume as Bejat experiments with new medium.
